Bio:
My name is Shontia Davis, but my grandfather called me At'eed Toli, or Crystal Girl. I am a Dine woman of the Many Goats clan, born for the Honey combed Rock People. The Tangled People are my maternal grandparents and my paternal grandparents are the Within His Covers clan. I grew up in Chinle, AZ on the Navajo reservation but moved to Omaha, NE to pursue my education at Creighton University. I wish to share the indigenous existence by ironically utilizing a colonizer tool previously used to antiquate indigenous peoples.
Artist Statement:
It is my intent to use photography to reflect a more modern narrative of indigenous peoples in the Americas and to break the antiquated, monolithic 'indian' stereotype. It is my hope that by doing this, I can better amplify indigenous voices and share my lens as a indigenous woman in the U.S..
